Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • A treasure-trove of Deco kitsch to take home as your very own. Everything from cutesy salt-&-pepper sets to really rather nice reproduction lamps.

  • Local artists live and work here, giving classes as well as selling their work.

  • US and Latin American photographers and artists.

  • Right on the water, with its own deck, pool, and pier, they’ve been sponsoring a Tea Dance every Sunday evening for over 20 years. Clothing always optional. Open to participants of all sexual inclinations.

  • Key West’s only oceanfront adult alternative resort, catering to the most mixed clientele you can imagine. The biggest draw is the clothingoptional pool and sundeck right out on the Atlantic, which is pretty much “Party Central” most hours of the day and night.

  • Built by Arquitectonica in 1982 and soon thereafter one of the stars of Miami Vice , this “building with the hole in it” is in danger of being overrun by the rampant construction going on all along Brickell. The “hole” is an ingenious 37-ft (11-m) cube cut out of the building’s center, at the 12th floor. A red spiral staircase and a palm tree draw your attention to it in a delightful way.

  • Actually two hotels on opposite corners of 7th Street, these perfectly located Deco bon-bons are excellent value. You’re in the middle of SoBe’s most popular stretch, and you get comfortable rooms and a complimentary continental breakfast.

  • Aventura Mall

Lord & Taylor, Bloomingdale’s, Burdines, and Macy’s are the upscale anchors, in addition to specialty stores including Abercrombie & Fitch, Ann Taylor, Guess?, J. Crew, FAO Schwarz, Fossil, and Clinique. Art galleries, some excellent restaurants, an international food court, and a 24-screen cineplex complete the picture.

  • Great oysters, crab legs, spicy steamed peel-and-eat shrimp, clams, mussels, crawfish, conch fritters, and Island rum drinks to wash it all down.

  • Don’t be a couch potato, go to B.E.D. instead. A bubbling mix of gay and straight, and, yes, there are actual beds for lounging on.
