Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • For a taste of the Islands, stop by this earthy little shack selling tropical fruits, vegetables, flour, etc.

  • If you cross the Everglades, your inevitable first stop on the Gulf Coast will be Naples. This wealthy beach city prides itself on a manicured beauty, 55 golf courses, and a soigné downtown area. There’s a pleasant pier where you can commune with pelicans or do some fishing, and 10 miles (16 km) of pristine, sugary beaches, with warmer waters than the Atlantic. Nearby Marco Island, the most northerly of the Ten Thousand Islands archipelago, is a good base for delving into the western fringe of the Everglades. It has been the source of significant Calusa Native American finds, some dating back 3,500 years.

  • One of the more sober Deco edifices, built in 1938 and impeccably restored with every comfort. The rooms are done in a tastefully subdued Post-Modern style by noted designer Peter Page, who also restored other South Beach landmarks.

  • Fewer than 50 of these diminutive creatures were left until this refuge was established in 1957. Now there are estimated to be about 800. Drive very slowly.

  • The city’s most striking skyscraper is the work of architect I. M. Pei, perhaps most famous for putting the glass pyramid in the courtyard of the Louvre in Paris. This building is notable both during the day for its Op-Art horizontal banding across the stepped hemi-cylinders, and at night for the changing, sophisticated colors of its overall illumination. Built in 1983, the office building was known first as Centrust Tower, but it now bears the moniker of its current principal tenant.

  • It’s a bit off the beaten path, but this is a bar, lounge, and dance club all in one. Hip-hop reigns supreme, with non-stop music and a party atmosphere.

  • Nerve Lounge

An understated choice favored by locals, where you can hear yourself think, and your friends talk! Neither edgy nor elegant, but regulars praise it for its “reality factor.” A cozy gathering place for friends up for slightly subdued fun.

  • This hip-hop dance club is not exclusively gay, but it is gayfriendly and has some gay-only nights, and some gay-only Sunday mornings.

  • Justifiably SoBe’s most famous café.

  • Numero uno on Ocean Drive, it’s spacious and bustling, perfect for a drink, snack, or meal, and avid people-watching.
