Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • This is a crafts show held in late January, but also an excuse for “Conchs” to celebrate being themselves – something they’re always ready to do in Key West.

  • A taste of Portuguese cuisine, with sardinhas assadas (grilled sardines), salada polvo (octopus salad), mussels, squid, and assorted cheeses.

  • A lantern-lit evening stroll through the mysterious streets of Key’s West’s Old Town allows you to discover a haunted island.

  • A marvelous collection of properties including the Southernmost Hotel, Southernmost on the Beach, La Mer House, and Dewey House. Each has its own character, but all have the charm to create oases of serenity within this island’s highpitched energy.

  • The chef utilizes the abundance of ingredients indigenous to the Caribbean and the Florida peninsula, but prepares them with a flourish that redefines regional cuisine. The lobster with marinated plantain is a tour de force.

  • Despite the rather seamy area it inhabits, “The Baghdad of Dade County” is worth visiting for its 90 or so Moorish-style buildings. They were built here by Glenn Curtiss during the 1920s boom.

  • Another delightful example of the quirky fantasy architecture dreamed up in the 1920s. Unfortunately, the run-down area around is anything but a dream.

  • Nicknamed the “Baghdad of Dade County,” the fantasy follies of this now-depressed district were the brainchild of Glenn Curtiss in the 1920s. All in pink, with minarets, burnished domes, and keyhole arches, the restored City Hall is the best example left. (But don’t stray far from it.)

  • Up to 1,200 dealers show up here seven days a week from 7am–7pm, hawking everything and anything you can think of to satisfy an orgy of acquisition. Weekends are best, when the number of dealers, browsers, and bargain-hunters swells.

  • Favored by the likes of Julia Roberts, this open-air venue is one of the most exclusive, so be prepared to wait. Mostly house music.
