Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • Grab a seat on the outdoor patio and indulge yourself, just as Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, and Johnny Depp have before you, in gawking at the SoBe procession and partaking of the Mediterranean-style delectables.

  • Penrod’s Complex

A good-value club, with several bars and dance floors. Downstairs is the upbeat Nikki Beach, with a non-stop party atmosphere. Upstairs is the exclusive Pearl Lounge.

  • Penrod’s Complex

This beachfront complex is a playground for the Euro-hip and trendy denizens of SoBe. Nikki Beach is located on the first floor and Pearl Restaurant & Champagne Lounge is on the second. New themes and dances every week, fashion shows, and interactive entertainment. Valet parking.

    Liquid dance floor crobar
  • A wonderful range of spicy sauces for all purposes – from barbecuing to killing off your enemies.

  • The first Saturday of every month is “Surreal Saturday” in the experimental performance arena, with four featured performances of music, dance, theater, and poetry inside, and a DJ artist scratching tunes outside. Also rhumba and drumming jam sessions.

  • In 1929 one Richter C. Perky, a property speculator, built this awkward structure, designed to be every bat’s dream-home; in exchange, the bats were supposed to rid the area of its voracious mosquitoes. Unfortunately, the bats he imported instantly flew away, while the mosquitoes thrived.

  • Peter Miller Hotel, SoBe

Authentic 1935 Deco, although a bit down-atthe-heel, this place promotes itself as “the best deal on South Beach” – the rates are extremely good if you negotiate for a week or so. Rooms are large and comfortable. Tends toward an older clientele.

  • Always packed with Brazilians and others. Dishes include meaty linguincinha sausages and rich sautéed prawns. Food here is by buffet only.

  • In the heart of the historic Seaport District, the hotel is surrounded by lush tropical gardens. It has four unique bars, three award-winning restaurants, and luxurious Islandcolonial style rooms, all with ocean, pool, or garden views.

  • This was originally the site of the work camp for those who built Henry M. Flagler’s Overseas Railroad Bridge, described as the eighth wonder of the world when it was completed in 1912. A marine research foundation is housed in the old buildings. To get to the island, you can walk or take the shuttle, which uses a section of the original bridge.
