  • Calle Ocho Walk

The area between 11th and 17th Avenues is excellent for walking. You can check out ethnic shops and sample various Cuban delicacies along the way (see Calle Ocho and Around).

  • Always lively, usually with young, perky people, this is downtown Coconut Grove. As well as shops, outdoor eateries, and cafés, live bands often play in CocoWalk (see Coral Gables and Coconut Grove).

  • Although it appears to be insensate rock, coral is actually a living organism, and a very fragile one at that, easily damaged by the slightest touch.

  • One of several South Florida beaches that are rated among the top ten in the entire US, this one is on upper Key Biscayne (see Crandon Park).

  • Walk the nature trails to Florida Bay and check out the Museum of Natural History of the Florida Keys and the Adderly Town Historic Site.

  • Deco District

With some 800 Tropical Deco wonders to behold, you can hardly miss; just walk or bike along Ocean Drive, and Collins and Washington Avenues between about 5th and 22nd Streets.

  • While running greyhound races part of the year, Flagler has year-round simulcasting of dog and horse races.

  • These unforgettable experiences are available at Miami’s Seaquarium and all along the Keys (see Dolphin Research Center). Be sure to make reservations as much as a month in advance. Otherwise, try a Dolphin Watch.

  • Notable for its S-curved neck, distinctive beak, and spectacular diving skills, this is one of the most fascinating of Keys birds.

  • Located almost 70 miles (110 km) west of Key West, these seven islands and their surrounding waters comprise a fantastic park. The snorkeling sights are exceptional, due to the shallow waters and abundance of marine life. You can snorkel directly off the beaches of Fort Jefferson or take one of the trips to the wreck of the Windjammer , which sank on Loggerhead Reef in 1907. Tropical fish, lobster, and even goliath grouper can be found (see Dry Tortugas from Key West).
