  • Key Largo Hammocks State Botanical Site

The largest remaining stand of tropical West Indian hardwood and mangrove is a refuge for protected indigenous flora and fauna.

  • Key West Beaches

Key West’s relatively modest beaches are lined up along the southern side of the island, stretching from Fort Zachary Taylor State Park in the west to Smathers Beach in the east. The latter is the largest and most popular, but locals favor the former because it’s less crowded. For convenience, the beach at the bottom of Duval Street, at the Southernmost Point in the US, is fine, friendly, and full of refreshment options.

  • Key West Old Town

The only sensible way to get around Key West is either on foot or by bike; there’s so much detail to take in and, besides, parking is usually a problem here. A planned tour can be fine (see Old Town Ghost Walk), but it’s just as good to walk wherever inspiration leads (see Key West).

  • Key West Waters

Take the plunge right off the beach at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, or join an expedition out to the reefs that lie all around this island (see Key West). There are plenty of trips offered by local companies, most of them taking three to four hours in total, including at least an hour and a half of reef time. They usually leave twice a day, at around 9am and again at about 1pm.

  • A very popular activity, given the prevailing maritime winds. There’s even a park especially for kite enthusiasts at the south end of Haulover Park.

  • Access is by boat only to this virgin hardwood forest home and gardens built by William Matheson. Call the Long Key Recreation Area to arrange a tour.

  • Besides effective recreations of habitats in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, the Kalihari, and the Serengeti, the extensive park also features evocations of an Indian forest and the Great Plains of North America. Drive or take a guided bus tour through over 500 acres (200 ha) of wildlife.

  • Features include a boardwalk through a mangrove swamp next to a lagoon where you can see water birds. Snorkeling is good in the shallow waters off the beach.

  • Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary

A brilliant coral dive location, and the closest great snorkeling to Key West. Accessible from Bahia Honda State Park.

  • This broad, long, and wellmaintained stretch of sand is, for many, the epitome of South Beach. In season, bronzed bodies line up row after row, some with boom boxes blasting, others just catching the rays. The more active play volleyball, do gymnastics, and, of course, take to the waves. From 5th to 11th Streets, women can go topless.
