Coral Gables and Coconut Grove, taken together, constitute one of the most upscale neighborhoods in Greater Miami. The former is actually a separate city, while the latter is a district of Miami, its oldest, and the site of the Miami City Hall. Coral Gables was one of the nation’s first “planned” cities and is consistently posh from end to end. Coconut Grove is a more variegated mosaic, historically the focus of Miami’s intellectual, bohemian community but also incorporating the blighted “Black Grove”, where the descendants of Bahamian workers often live in real squalor.

  • Florida lifestyle clothing means loose and colorful, natural fabrics, and somewhat frivolous designs for both men and women.

  • In the 1960s, this was where the Grove hippies grooved, and on weekends now and when there’s a festival, some of the old magic gets temporarily resurrected. The park is named after Charles and Isabella Peacock, who built the area’s first hotel, the Peacock Inn, which at the time was the only hotel between Palm Beach and Key West. The park is now largely a baseball field, and there’s also a rustic Chamber of Commerce building.

  • A romantic spot, capturing the feel of Paris. Every bite is a thrill to the palate, although it is hardly French, leaning more to the Caribbean. Grilled fish with plantains and salsa, for example.

  • The Cheesecake Factory

One of six in South Florida, serving everything from pot stickers to shepherd’s pie, and, of course, at least 36 types of cheesecake.

  • This store carries hand-crafted gifts and fashionable accessories for the body and home. There’s also fine art, curios, antiques, and unusual silver and gold jewelry.

  • Lift a pint of homemade brew and sample crawfish or calamari snacks.

  • Venetian Pool

One of the loveliest and most evocative of Merrick’s additions to his exotic vision for Coral Gables. The pool is fed by springs and was the site of at least one movie starring Esther Williams, the 1940s water-ballet beauty (see also Venetian Pool & Venetian Pool).

  • Considered the world’s most beautiful public swimming pool. You could spend half a day enjoying its charms (see Venetian Pool & Venetian Pool).

  • Villa Vizcaya

One of the most historic and beautiful places in the Greater Miami area; this icon of the city’s cultural life is not to be missed.

  • Villa Vizcaya

A recreation of a 16thcentury Italian villa with formal gardens.
