The Florida Keys are a string of wild, variegated gems hung in a necklace of liquid turquoise. These islands still have abundant wildlife, including unique flora and fauna, as evidenced by all the parks and family attractions focusing on encounters with nature. Even so, at least 20 different species of Keys plant and animal life are endangered or threatened. This is a place for outdoor activities: water sports of all kinds, sportfishing, and hiking through the nature preserves and virgin tropical forests. Along the only route (US 1) that takes you from the mainland all the way out to Key West, you’ll find everything from plush resorts to roadside stands selling homegrown produce.

  • There is no doubt that bicycling is one of the best ways to see the Keys. The roads are fairly bike-friendly, especially in Key West, and bicycle rentals are readily available.

  • Boating and Sailing

The many dozens of marinas in the Keys are full of companies ready to rent you whatever kind of boat you would like – or to take you out, if you prefer.

  • Bourbon Street Complex

Included here are the popular Bourbon Street Pub, the 801 Bourbon Bar, 1 Saloon, Magnolia’s and Pizza Joe’s, and The New Orleans House, a gay guesthouse. 801 features drag shows every night in the upstairs bar.

  • Homemade buckwheat pancakes or fresh snapper with a nut crust help make this a favorite for Sunday brunch among the Conch cognoscenti.

  • This was the original Sloppy Joe’s, where Hemingway was a regular. Live bands feature all the time; Conch hero Jimmy Buffett used to sing here.

  • “Savor the flavor of paradise” is their motto, and this old factory probably does, in fact, turn out the next best thing to a genuine Cuban stogie. Prices range from $3 to $10.75 for a single cigar.

  • Key West’s train tour is a must-do for first-time visitors. It gives an invaluable overview of the place and all sorts of insights into its history and culture.

  • Although it appears to be insensate rock, coral is actually a living organism, and a very fragile one at that, easily damaged by the slightest touch.

  • Walk the nature trails to Florida Bay and check out the Museum of Natural History of the Florida Keys and the Adderly Town Historic Site.

  • Since Key West is closer to Cuba than to the Florida mainland, it makes sense to find a Cuban crafts shop here, despite the official embargo. Items include handmade boxes, dolls, and paintings.
