  • Bahia Honda State Recreation Area

Very heavily forested, with great nature trails. Fascinating snorkeling, too (see Bahia Honda State Park).

  • There is no doubt that bicycling is one of the best ways to see the Keys. The roads are fairly bike-friendly, especially in Key West, and bicycle rentals are readily available.

  • Boating and Sailing

The many dozens of marinas in the Keys are full of companies ready to rent you whatever kind of boat you would like – or to take you out, if you prefer.

  • Although it appears to be insensate rock, coral is actually a living organism, and a very fragile one at that, easily damaged by the slightest touch.

  • Walk the nature trails to Florida Bay and check out the Museum of Natural History of the Florida Keys and the Adderly Town Historic Site.

  • Notable for its S-curved neck, distinctive beak, and spectacular diving skills, this is one of the most fascinating of Keys birds.

  • Egrets

Similar to herons are the great egret, the snowy egret (distinguishable by its black legs and yellow feet), and the reddish egret.

  • Deep-sea fishermen find the Keys to be paradise. With the Gulf Stream nearby, these waters offer the most varied fishing imaginable. Boat trips are easy to come by; try the Key West Fishing Club.

  • Looe Key Reef is one of the Keys’ most spectacular coral reefs and is great for snorkeling and diving. Call for information about boat trips to the best spots.

  • A safe haven for recovering Keys birds of all types. Healed ones are set free, if they like.
