Nowher else on earth seems to be so happily addicted to glamour as Miami Beach. All the traits of modern life are here, pushed to the limit: symbols of speed, wealth, and status are vaunted everywhere you look in this body-conscious, sexually charged resort. Key Biscayne, the next big island to the south, provides a stark contast to the dynamism and self-consciousness of its neighbor; here you will find a tranquil and family-oriented atmosphere pervading parks, perfect beaches, and a scattering of museums.

More on the Deco District
  • Grab a seat on the outdoor patio and indulge yourself, just as Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, and Johnny Depp have before you, in gawking at the SoBe procession and partaking of the Mediterranean-style delectables.

  • Penrod’s Complex

A good-value club, with several bars and dance floors. Downstairs is the upbeat Nikki Beach, with a non-stop party atmosphere. Upstairs is the exclusive Pearl Lounge.

  • Rumi

Named as it is after the 13thcentury Sufi mystic, you would expect to hear world music here, and you do, as well as house, trance, and other Buddha Bartype lounge music.

  • SoBe’s best mix of all-gay bar and dance club. It pairs a big-room interior with sidewalkcafé style. Located right on Lincoln Road in the heart of South Beach.

  • SoBe and the Deco District

Posh high-life and decadent lowlife meet and the fun never stops in the vibrant beach-and-nightclub community of South Beach – otherwise known as SoBe (see SoBe Life). The world-famous Deco District (see Deco District), an essential element of Miami Beach, is beautifully preserved in hundreds of colorful, inspired buildings.

  • South Beach Couture

A couple of blocks off the beach and so, presumably, a bit less costly, but the names are the same: Versace, Armani, D&G, DKNY – fine clothing for men and women. Shirts start at about $85.

  • A convenience store, but the stars are the cigars, either hand-rolled on the premises or imported from everywhere but Cuba.

  • The Starbucks on Ocean Drive is predictably always busy. The outside tables are perfect for watching the world go by while enjoying an inexpensive snack and a coffee.

  • The hotel pool or the surging gray-blue Atlantic Ocean? This is Florida, and swimming is number one – snorkeling, too, in quieter areas, especially Crandon Park on Key Biscayne and off South Pointe.

  • Tantra pleases all the senses, with the stunning interior – fresh-grass floor, water wall, fiber optic “sky”, and erotic art. That’s aside from the food, aphrodisiac drinks, and new-age music.
