Nowher else on earth seems to be so happily addicted to glamour as Miami Beach. All the traits of modern life are here, pushed to the limit: symbols of speed, wealth, and status are vaunted everywhere you look in this body-conscious, sexually charged resort. Key Biscayne, the next big island to the south, provides a stark contast to the dynamism and self-consciousness of its neighbor; here you will find a tranquil and family-oriented atmosphere pervading parks, perfect beaches, and a scattering of museums.

More on the Deco District
  • Tap Tap

Real Haitian food, some of it fiery with red chilies. Try the grilled conch with manioc or the shrimp in coconut sauce, with mango sorbet for dessert (see Tap Tap, South Beach).

  • There are plenty of tennis courts all over the islands.

  • Terrace at the Tides

Very chic outdoor dining. Sit where celebrities have sat and tuck into the gourmet cooking: maybe lobster gazpacho or coconut mascarpone cheesecake.

  • The mystic arts are here, everything from prophecy to realignment through crystals, and feng shui – all the apparatus and books you may require. Ask what the store’s name is about for a quick lesson in metaphysics.

  • The Wolfsonian

A wonderful museum and design research institute that traces the origins of Deco and other significant modern artistic trends within this 1920s’ former storage facility.

  • SoBe’s largest gay venue has recently expanded, and there’s something on every night of the week. Happy hour daily 1–9pm.

  • Van Dyke

In the heart of Lincoln Road Mall, this is a prime spot for viewing the street parade. A good place for breakfast or lunch. Live jazz upstairs.

  • Anywhere there’s a developed beach, you’ll find a volleyball net and a quorum of players. Lummus Park is the best place to show off your skills to Miami’s greatest beach bums, but South Pointe Park’s a close contender.

  • This bar attracts a young, rowdy, post-beach crowd with its powerful frozen drinks with names such as Call Me a Cab. Nibbles to accompany the drinking include tasty fried calamari.

  • For windsurfing, the intracoastal waterways are calmer and there’s almost always a breeze; check out Windsurfer Beach on Virginia Key for rentals. For surfing, the waves on the Atlantic side are plenty gnarly; the best spot is just off First Street Beach.
