Neiman Marcus and Miami’s very first Nordstrom are at its heart, along with a range of fine shops and places to eat, such the elegant Palm Restaurant. Mediterranean-Revival style, with landscaped walkways and fountains, is in keeping with the precedent set by the city’s founder George Merrick (see Merrick’s Coral Gables Fantasies).

For your upscale shopping convenience, all the SoBe boutiques that seriously matter are clustered around intersection.

Semi-open-air arcades with waterfalls and tropical vegetation form the backdrop to over 100 shops. Mostly upscale, they include Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Banana Republic, the Pottery Barn, and the Discovery Channel Store for kids. In addition, there are 12 movie screens and some 13 restaurants and cafés, including the inevitable Haagen Däzs and Mrs. Field’s Cookies.

Lord & Taylor, Bloomingdale’s, Burdines, and Macy’s are the upscale anchors, in addition to specialty stores including Abercrombie & Fitch, Ann Taylor, Guess?, J. Crew, FAO Schwarz, Fossil, and Clinique. Art galleries, some excellent restaurants, an international food court, and a 24-screen cineplex complete the picture.

Fear not! There is a Saks Fifth Avenue even way down in South Miami – plus some 170 high-end specialty shops and several other fine anchor stores, including Florida’s largest Burdine’s. Unless you’re shopping on the cheap, just ignore the fact that there’s also a JC Penney, a Radio Shack, and a Best Buy. The décor is pleasing, if a bit predictable – palm-tree pillars and ceilings painted to resemble skies.

Fort Lauderdale’s high-end shopping is spread between its main street downtown and a mall just near the beach. Las Olas’ 100-plus boutiques are unique, all mixed with some really good restaurants. The Galleria, East Sunrise Blvd at A1A, offers Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Newly expanded, Boca’s premier mall just took a quantum leap into even greater luxury. It now has a Nordstrom to go with its Saks, Cartier, Tiffany, Lord & Taylor, Bloomie’s, and Williams-Sonoma. Set amid exotic foliage, skylights, handglazed tiles, and sculptural accents, there’s also a fancy cuisine court – no fast-food chain joints here! If you venture into downtown Boca, be sure to stroll through pastel-pink Mizner Park, where you’ll also find more chic shopping options.

Besides the tacky T-shirt shops, Key West’s main drag (see Duval Street) is also home to some superb emporiums of quality merchandise, including: clothing at Fast Buck Freddie’s (No. 500); Sunlion Jewelry (No. 513); Island Furniture and Accessories (No. 1024); Gingerbread Square Gallery, mixing local artists and world-class glass blowers (No. 1207); and Archeo Ancient Art, which specializes in African art and Persian rugs (No. 1208).
