  • 1. Key West Fantasy Fest

For two weeks leading up to Halloween, Key West gives itself over to non-stop celebration. Then, on the Saturday before the 31st, a parade, featuring lavish floats and outlandish costumes, departs from Mallory Square and slowly winds down Duval Street. In a spirit of free abandon, many revelers go nude, except for a bit of body paint here and a feather or two there.

  • 2. Carnaval Miami

For the Cuban district, March is a time of dancing and singing in the streets – to Latin jazz, pop, flamenco and tango. It culminates on the second Sunday with what claims to be the largest party in the world. Twenty-three blocks of Little Havana are closed off and performers line the way, along with food stalls of ethnic favorites. An enormous fireworks display brings a resounding finale to the festivities.

  • 3. Winter Party and White Party

These annual gay beach parties are principally about buff young wannabes chasing international-circuit models. Still, one appreciative participant praised the events as “a sea of beautiful, naked men.” Well, not entirely naked, but nearly so. Pumped-up raves go on all night in the choicest South Beach venues.

  • 4. Coconut Grove Arts Festival

The Grove (see Coral Gables and Coconut Grove) comes fully alive with one of the biggest arts festivals in the country, complete with competitions, allday concerts, tasty street food, and throngs of avid arts lovers.

  • 5. Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition

A traditional American county fair, replete with rides, sideshows, cotton candy, candied apples, live performances, and exhibits relating to farm life and crafts.

  • 6. Miami-Bahamas Goombay Festival

Celebrating Coconut Grove’s Bahamian heritage, with music, dance, and loads of fun.

  • 7. King Mango Strut

A Coconut Grove spoof on the now-defunct Orange Bowl Parade.

  • 8. Hispanic Heritage Festival

This is a month-long Latino blast, comprising street parties, food festivals, films, music and dance performances, and even an Hispanic beauty pageant.

  • 9. Italian Renaissance Festival

Over 200 costumed performers bring this historical-fantasy event to life at Hialeah Park, which is usually closed to the public. While you’re there, take a look at the 400 resident pink flamingos.

  • 10. International Mango Festival

The luscious fruit is celebrated with gusto. Enjoy a complete mango feast and learn how to divine when the exotic fruit is at its peak.
