  • 1. Clay Hotel and Youth Hostel, SoBe

This enchanting Spanishstyle place, built in 1925 and beautifully refurbished, also happens to be the biggest bargain in the Western World and is always teeming with international youth. Book very far in advance to get a place.

  • 2. Floyd’s Youth Hostel, Fort Lauderdale

A hostel with a friendly, relaxing atmosphere. There are four beds per room and all apartment units have two bedrooms. Some private rooms are available. If you prefer a seaside location, ask about their beach hostel.

  • 3. Miami Beach Travelers’ Hostel

One of the cheapest places right in the middle of the SoBe action, this hostel radiates a funloving atmosphere of camaraderie, even though it is a bit grotty. Amenities include Internet access, kitchen, and laundry.

  • 4. Tropics Hotel and Hostel, SoBe

This is a genuine Art Deco building, complete with neon marquee, in one of the most desirable locations on South Beach. It’s clean and comfortable and, given the location, worth two to three times the asking price. There’s even a pool. Book far in advance.

  • 5. Peter Miller Hotel, SoBe

Authentic 1935 Deco, although a bit down-atthe-heel, this place promotes itself as “the best deal on South Beach” – the rates are extremely good if you negotiate for a week or so. Rooms are large and comfortable. Tends toward an older clientele.

  • 6. Berkeley Shore Hotel, SoBe

Definitely one of the coolest Deco buildings around, with its elaborate façade, and riot of Islandstyle color inside. The proprietors and staff are mostly Cubans – there’s a vivacity about the place that feels Caribbean. Rooms are spacious, though basic. Many have kitchenettes.

  • 7. Green Island Inn, Fort Lauderdale

An amazing deal. The whole ambience is so inviting and spacious it feels like a resort. Homey touches are everywhere, and each room has its own uniquely tropical look, as well as a full kitchen. Book well in advance.

  • 8. Florida Beach Hostel, Fort Lauderdale

A clean and fresh place near the beach, with a nice rooftop patio and tropical garden courtyard for picnicking. There’s free parking and some free food, too.

  • 9. Budget Key West

No pool, no lobby, no frills, but it’s clean, comfortable, bright, secure, within easy walking distance of most places in Old Town, and the vernacular architecture is appealing. All rooms have a kitchenette.

  • 10. Key West Youth Hostel

Offers snorkeling trips and scuba instruction, plus bike rentals. It has a courtyard, picnic area, and game rooms, but only 10 private rooms, so book well in advance.
