  • Oblò, Mantova

Popular pub with friendly proprietors, good beers, great panini , a non-smoking room and a loyal local clientele. The music is loud, but it’s not a raucous place.

  • Little round tables and Guinness on tap just a few steps off the main square.

  • Pasticceria Marchesi

A delightfully Old World café and chocolatier near the Last Supper (see Pasticceria Marchesi, Milan).

  • Pasticceria Marchesi, Milan

A wonderful old-fashioned café and chocolatier happily “discovered” by many a visitor trekking out to see the Last Supper . The décor hasn’t changed since 1824, the coffee is quite good and the pastries are favoured by Giorgio Armani.

  • If you feel it just ain’t a club unless there’s bouncers and velvet ropes keeping the less-than-perfect at bay, then Plastic is the trendy spot for you. Inside, there’s a mix of techno, house and jungle – background to the pick-up scene for all tastes (Thursday is officially gay/lesbian night). There’s also a laid-back billiards room, with jukebox favourites.

  • Rolling Stone is as classic as the band after which it is named; a no-excuses, party-hard, rock-music discotheque filling a cavernous ex-cinema with huge crowds drawn to hear the best live rock acts of any venue in town. We’re talking everything from Iron Maiden to Van Morrison, Nick Cave to Oasis. Weekends – when there are no international rock stars on the bill – the sound system is turned over to Milan’s top DJs, and the crowd gets a chance to throw down some moves on the floor.

  • The undisputed king of live rock music and a thumping disco has weathered the past 20 years with its reputation firmly intact.

  • This historic café and tea room is also known for making some of the best chocolates in Italy (see Sant’Ambroseus, Milan).

  • Looking every inch the 1936 café, from its wood-panelling to its pink stucco decorations, Sant’Ambroseus is counted among the great temples of chocolate in Italy. Their speciality is the ambrogiotti : an indulgence of dark chocolate wrapped around an egg cream.

  • A veteran of Navigli nightlife – a jazz bar with quality live acts nightly, a restaurant and pizzeria, and a barge for al fresco fun.
