  • 1. Le Due Corti, Como

This ancient, rambling post house at the city’s medieval walls has been a classy and atmospheric hotel since 1992. Excellent restaurant and popular bar, too.

  • 2. Villa Flori, Como

Originally built in 1860 as a wedding gift for the owner’s daughter and Italian hero Garibaldi. A genteel 19th-century air still clings to the rooms.

  • 3. Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Bellagio

Bellagio’s most elegant summer villa was transformed into this fine hotel in 1873. Rooms vary widely, though all are luxurious. The mini-apartments stay open year-round, as do the gym, beauty centre and indoor pool.

  • 4. Du Lac, Bellagio

The friendliest family-run hotel in town happens to sit right on the lakeside piazza, with lovely views from charming rooms fitted with antiques.

  • 5. Suisse, Bellagio

Ten simple rooms with TVs and fancy wood furniture above a restaurant.

  • 6. Villa d’Este, Cernobbio

This sumptuous Renaissance villa is consistently rated among the top 10 hotels in the world and has long attracted royalty and celebrity. No expense is spared (antiques and silks, marbles and mahoganies), as reflected in the bill.

  • 7. Milano, Varenna

This beloved old pensione may be turned into a boutique hotel in years to come.

  • 8. Villa Cipressi, Varenna

Rooms in this 16th-century villa (see Villa Cipressi, Varenna) are spacious, with killer views – remarkable for the price.

  • 9. Grand Hotel Menaggio

This 19th-century villa retains a Belle Époque air, but rooms are modern.

  • 10. Grand Hotel Tremezzo

The gardens of this 1910 hotel are worthy of neighbouring Villa Carlotta. The opulence extends to the highly impressive rooms.
