Montréal and Québec City

Situated on the mighty St Lawrence River, the sights of these two cities captivate visitors with their history, culture and festivity. Not only were they both major players in the foundation of Canada but their portside locations have kept them at the heart of international commerce, resulting in a harmonious blend of heritage architecture and exciting modern venues that charm all those who come to Canada’s “belle province.”

  • The Grand Théâtre showcases the talents of l’Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, Opéra de Québec and an international line-up of musical stars (see Grand Théâtre de Québec, Québec City).

  • Conceived by Canadian architect and urban theorist Victor Prus, this inventive space uses a stacked concert hall grid to maximize on space limitations. The theater opened in 1971 and features a spectacular mural by Québec artist Jordi Bonet, which leads to the Salle Louis-Fréchette and Octave-Crémazie concert halls. Théâtre Trident, Opéra de Québec and the Club musical de Québec are based here, as well as concerts by the Orchestre symphonique de Québec. Pop concerts by international artists are also staged here sometimes.

  • These sites commemorate the tragic events experienced by many Irish immigrants who, escaping the potato famine in their native country, were quarantined here on their arrival to Canada but died during the typhoid epidemic of 1847. Take the tourist trolley to the village and hospitals sector, where you can admire numerous historic buildings, and visit the restored 1847 Lazaretto Catholic chapel.

  • On top of the 17-story Place Bonaventure convention center, the Hilton provides an oasis of comfort and convenience. It has an enticing swimming pool and the French cuisine is exquisite at its Le Castillon restaurant.

  • The Hilton offers 577 sumptuous rooms, a great view and vicinity to Place Québec shopping.

  • The finest Canadian harness-racing professionals take part in year-round competitions.

  • Immediately west of Montréal is horse country. Visitors can make a day of it by touring the rolling hills of Hudson and Rigaud (see Hudson and Rigaud) and be back in the city by nightfall. The Double J Ranch also has a network of trails.

  • Four-poster beds, heavy window sashes and ornate furnishings cast visitors back to the early 1700s. Beamed ceilings, family heirlooms and rich French cuisine complete the package. Lovely breakfast atrium and lounge for cocktails.

  • Located south of Montréal, this modern hostellerie overlooks the grandeur of the Richelieu River and the rising Mont St-Hilaire. Seventeen rooms and five suites with whirlpool.

  • This friendly hotel faces Parc Georges-V and is within close proximity to Parlement and Parc des Champs-de-Bataille.
