Montréal and Québec City

Situated on the mighty St Lawrence River, the sights of these two cities captivate visitors with their history, culture and festivity. Not only were they both major players in the foundation of Canada but their portside locations have kept them at the heart of international commerce, resulting in a harmonious blend of heritage architecture and exciting modern venues that charm all those who come to Canada’s “belle province.”

  • La Maison d’Elizabeth & Emma, Québec City

    This lovely B&B is named after the proprietors’ young daughters Elizabeth and Emma. An historic exterior with Art Deco elements inside, the balconied home sits on a tree-lined street ambiance but equally because of the gastronomic delights available. Free parking.

  • Every evening of Carnaval two parades mark the end of the day’s festivities. The “Little (But Loud) Parade” is for adults, while “La petite fanfare du Bonhomme” gathers momentum throughout the Place de la Famille creating a ceremonial end to the day for children.

  • Often considered the best burgers in Canada, variants include double patties, cream cheese, bacon and soy substitutes. A young, arty ambiance.

  • The largest amusement park in Québec was originally opened for Expo ’67. Since Six Flags took over as owner in 2001, however, even more fun can be had as new rides and attractions are added each year. Enthusiasts will love Vertigo, which swings visitors 18 m (60 ft) up in the air through a 360-degree rotation. Tamer rides, such as spinning tea cups and carousels, will appeal to younger children.

  • Chef-owner André LaPalme provides “soirées épicurienne ” of five courses and four wine servings. Reservations essential.

  • Each year a tantalizing new theme is created to lure young people into an intricate maze of corridors, obstacles, puzzles, surprises and thrills, in this port hangar. The entire family can solve the mysteries together, or kids can go on their own.

  • Lac Brome consists of several delightful lakeside communities: Knowlton; Foster; Bondville; Fulford; Iron Hill; East Hill; and West Brome, all of which retain in part a bygone way of life.

  • Sir Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman are among those on the list of regulars at the Manoir Hovey resort here (see Manoir Hovey, North Hatley). Le Festival du Lac Massawippi runs popular music concerts from April until end of June.

  • Located at the eastern edge of the townships in the Appalachian foothills, this peaceful lake provides outdoor activities including a beach.

  • This immense lake is a draw for boat-lovers. La Traversée Internationale du lac Memphré-magog, an annual international swimming contest, attracts thousands to the nearby town of Magog in summer.
