  • 1. Casino de Montréal

The most stunning casino in Canada, given its location on the Ile Notre-Dame and overlooking the Vieux-Port and the glittering towers of downtown. The casino offers a full house of attractions including four superb dining facilities and nightly variety shows. Over 18s only.

  • 2. Altitude 737, Montréal

Using its height as its moniker, with views over Mont-Royal and the St Lawrence River valley, this three-floor enterprise offers visitors an entertainment package of lounge, dance club and restaurant. In summer they open the spectacular terrace for additional dancing space. Reservations recommended.

  • 3. Le Belmont, Montréal

Le Belmont has established itself as a landmark bar with the student crowd as well as office workers looking to unwind on the large dance-floor. Brick walls, pool tables and beer on tap create a welcoming pub atmosphere in the first area, while the larger dance club has more space and DJ-spun house music.

  • 4. Au Diable Vert, Montréal

If drinking, dancing and partying with the artists and students of Montréal’s Plateau area sounds like a good idea then head for this pub. The city’s most danceable DJs work the floor each weekend, while during the week the ambiance is more laid-back. Great beers and an amiable clientele.

  • 5. Upstairs Jazz Club, Montréal

Providing the best jazz music in Montréal is not simple in a city that annually hosts the world’s largest jazz festival (see Le Festival International de Jazz de Montréal). But with a tenacious attention to detail and atmosphere, as well as mixing international and local musicians, the owners of this popular club have succeeded in their aim. There’s a changing program of entertainment and delicious food served, too. Cover charge.

  • 6. Club Montréal Dôme, Montréal

The ultimate dance club in Montréal, the Dome attracts a continuous stream of international hip-hop performers and DJs to this central downtown site until the early hours of the morning. Volume rules in this massive space. Don’t even think about turning up until after midnight when it is really thumping. Cover charge and open to over 18s only.

  • 7. Chez Maurice Nightclub Complex, Québec City

A pulsating complex of nightlife temptations awaits the nocturnal patrons of this popular and newly renovated Québec City club. Housing five dynamic areas, the main attraction is the massive (and very loud) dance floor, filled with chic and beautiful 20- to 35-year-olds who have been carefully hand-picked by the doormen from a constant line-up outside. The top-floor lounge, Chez Charlotte, has a spectacular terrace that can seat 500, or try the Voodoo Grill for gourmet munchies. Cover charge. Over 18s only (see Chez Maurice Complex).

  • 8. Frankie’s Cabaret Club, Québec City

A trendy club with live music shows and a wonderful spot to meet and drink with friends or do your thing on the crowded dance floor. Very popular, particularly on Thursday and Friday nights. Cover charge varies, depending on which band is playing (see Frankie’s Cabaret Club).

  • 9. L’Impérial de Québec

This concert venue, set in a 19th-century theatre, hosts top local and international artists as well as Broadway-style shows. The bistro serves good food, too.

  • 10. Casino de Charlevoix

A breathtaking 90-minute drive northeast of Québec City along the north shore of the St Lawrence River and through the rugged Charlevoix region brings you to the majestic Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu Hotel. Here US presidents, movie moguls and tourists of every background have come to relax in historic splendor. Expanded in 1994 to include a casino, the facility now offers 780 slot machines and 21 table games.
