    This revamped arty bar/ restaurant, popular among local journalists, offers patrons an eclectic menu. The food-critic-turned-owner culls the best cuisine from different nations.

  • 2. La Cage aux Sports

    A boisterous crowd, yet friendly and welcoming, fills this tavern-like sports bar which includes numerous big-screen TVs, a great choice of beers and sports memorabilia on the walls.

    This is a popular meeting place, located in the W Hotel. The bar overlooks a lively lounge area, ideal for people watching.

    This is Montréal’s most written about restaurant, which offers a ground-breaking, highly original menu. Reservations are a must.

  • 5. Le Vieux Saint-Gabriel

    One of the oldest inns in North America (1754) is now a bar/restaurant set in a romantic location with inspired French architecture. An extensive wine selection is available.

  • 6. Auberge Pierre du Calvet

    A celebrated inn where Benjamin Franklin met with the Sons of Liberty in 1775. It has a cosy lounge with fireplace and an interior atrium garden where breakfast is served (see Auberge Pierre du Calvet).

    The bar attached to the popular Keg Steak House attracts a coterie of regulars spanning a wide range of occupations, nationalities and storytelling talents.

    A favorite actors’ hangout near the Centaur Theatre (see Centaur Theatre, Montréal), this Polish café/restaurant has a superb kitchen serving hearty borscht soup, great sausages and authentic apple strudel.

  • 10. Java U Lounge

    Replacing the long-standing jazz club L’Air du Temps, this newly renovated café/restaurant features wonderful panini sandwiches during the day, and turns into a tapas bar at night with live music and comedy.
