Munich

Of the city he lived in for many years, 20th-century writer Thomas Mann said that “Munich glows”. And indeed, the sky is often a brilliant blue dotted with puffy white clouds in “Italy’s northernmost city”, where the relaxed, often Baroque lifestyle gives it a southern flair. Englischer Garten and the Isar meadows are right in the middle of the city; Starnberger See and the mountains are virtually on the doorstep. But Munich is also a city of art and culture with an abundance of historic buildings, museum treasures, and a lively cultural scene. Fine art, leisure, and la dolce vita make this a unique city.

For Munich on the Internet, visit www.muenchen.de With 1.3 million inhabitants, Munich is Germany’s third-largest city.
  • Wonderful Christmas markets with stalls, mulled wine, and treats. On Marienplatz and in many other areas of the city.

  • Christkindl markets start on the first day of Advent. Midnight mass is held 24 Dec.

  • take a trip 120 kilometers south east on the autobahn towards salzburg....turn off at freilassing and head onto laufen a/d salzach, cross the bridge into austria to oberndorf on the other side, where on christmas eve every year without fail you can experience a fantastic festival of carols...this is where in a tiny chapel "silent night, holy night" was composed....the atmosphere at the midnight mass will truly affect you forever.

  • Gay street parade, shows.

  • With the magnificent Alps on the doorstep, rock climbers have plenty of opportunities to indulge in their passion. Munich also offers several artificial climbing walls to practise on before heading off to try out a real rock face.

  • With its elegant ambience, witty decor, beautiful bar counter, and red club chairs, the Morizz is one of chicest meeting places – and not only for the gay community. The food (European cuisine and many Thai-inspired dishes) and drinks are excellent. Several times a week, a DJ gets the beat going; the house parties are extremely popular.

  • Possibly the best Far Eastern food in the city – specialties from the Imperial cuisine of old Vietnam. Tip for vegetarians: try the tofu pâté or soybean quark wrapped in aromatic leaves.

  • Three days of comics, the New Art: pictures, books, and action on Praterinsel.

  • One of the most important days in the Bavarian Catholic calendar. Munich has a large procession.

  • Corpus Christi processions are held throughout southern Bavaria – the largest is in Munich – to mark this important Catholic feast day.
