Munich

Of the city he lived in for many years, 20th-century writer Thomas Mann said that “Munich glows”. And indeed, the sky is often a brilliant blue dotted with puffy white clouds in “Italy’s northernmost city”, where the relaxed, often Baroque lifestyle gives it a southern flair. Englischer Garten and the Isar meadows are right in the middle of the city; Starnberger See and the mountains are virtually on the doorstep. But Munich is also a city of art and culture with an abundance of historic buildings, museum treasures, and a lively cultural scene. Fine art, leisure, and la dolce vita make this a unique city.

  • This delicatessen owned and operated by catering tsar Gerd Käfer is located in pscale Bogenhausen. The city’s prominent citizens rub shoulders here as they shop and sample the delicacies.

The waves and rapids at the Flößlände are a paradise for surfers, and an alternative to the frigid Eisbach near the Haus der Kunst. Nearby is the Floßlände pub and beer garden (Zentralländstraße 30), and the Asam-Schlössl.

  • Each region has its own distinctive folk dress, and folklore associations keep the tradition alive, parading regional costumes in processions and at festivals such as the Wiesn.

  • The menu is a colouring book, which children can take home with them.

  • Across from the Gasteig, this hotel boasts 580 rooms (12 suites) and a beautiful view of the city from the high banks of the Isar River. Event facilities for 2,000 participants and 16 conference rooms.

  • In 1896, the playwright and author (1864–1918) founded a satirical journal, Simplicissimus , in Munich.
