Munich

Of the city he lived in for many years, 20th-century writer Thomas Mann said that “Munich glows”. And indeed, the sky is often a brilliant blue dotted with puffy white clouds in “Italy’s northernmost city”, where the relaxed, often Baroque lifestyle gives it a southern flair. Englischer Garten and the Isar meadows are right in the middle of the city; Starnberger See and the mountains are virtually on the doorstep. But Munich is also a city of art and culture with an abundance of historic buildings, museum treasures, and a lively cultural scene. Fine art, leisure, and la dolce vita make this a unique city.

For Munich on the Internet, visit www.muenchen.de With 1.3 million inhabitants, Munich is Germany’s third-largest city.
  • A traditional Bavarian hotel and 500-year-old restaurant located in the centre of Schliersee. Good traditional Bavarian fare. A folklore theatre is built onto the inn.

  • This traditional inn is home to Bavaria’s oldest folklore theatre – and, of course, authentic Bavarian cuisine.

  • Called “Hollywood on the Isar,” Geiselgasteig is a historic film-studio complex, where productions for television and the big screen are made. Enjoy guided tours and stunt shows at Bavaria Filmstadt.

  • Second only to Berlin’s film industry, Geiselgasteig has been a centre for film since 1910. Major productions have been shot here well into the modern era, including Petersen’s Das Boot , and films by Bergman and Fassbinder. Today, Bavaria Filmstadt presents screenings and live shows on the back lot.

  • Tucked away in the Hotel Excelsior, Geisel’s offers a selection of 400 wines and fine cuisine.

  • This exquisite collection of Greek and Roman sculptures and bas-reliefs includes 2,500-year-old Archaic figures, whose original colouring has been recently restored. Antique jewellery, bronzes, and Greek ceramics are on display in the Antikensammlungen.

  • Golfing has become a popular sport in Munich and the surrounding area. Golf lovers can choose from among more than 40 golf courses that are located in the vicinity of the Bavarian capital.

  • Tasty brunches, friendly waiting staff, and a playroom.

  • Traditional pub in the centre of Murnau, with home-brewed beer and Bavarian delicacies served in a rustic atmosphere. Check out the fermenting vats.

  • Munich’s indoor Großmarkt (wholesale market) has a vibrant atmosphere. Opened in 1912, the complex features four large halls. Several excellent restaurants and pubs have established themselves in and around the market.
