Munich

Of the city he lived in for many years, 20th-century writer Thomas Mann said that “Munich glows”. And indeed, the sky is often a brilliant blue dotted with puffy white clouds in “Italy’s northernmost city”, where the relaxed, often Baroque lifestyle gives it a southern flair. Englischer Garten and the Isar meadows are right in the middle of the city; Starnberger See and the mountains are virtually on the doorstep. But Munich is also a city of art and culture with an abundance of historic buildings, museum treasures, and a lively cultural scene. Fine art, leisure, and la dolce vita make this a unique city.

  • Located on the second floor of the Königshof hotel, this elegant restaurant has one Michelin star and 18 Gault Millau points. Out-of-this-world cuisine and a fantastic selection of over 800 wines.

  • The pompous backdrop of the Königsplatz (Royal Square) seems tailor-made for open-air events. In summer, usually in July, you can enjoy classic concerts and even opera performances. To round out the programme, the large square is also used as a stage for rock and pop concerts and film screenings.

  • Munich’s gay Internet café with a bar and outdoor patio located at the gateway to the gay district, Sendlinger Tor. Cocktails and small dishes are served to a mixed public in daytime, which gives way to a predominantly gay crowd at night.

  • A restaurant featuring typical Bavarian cuisine, the beer garden affords a glorious view of Kochelsee and the surrounding mountains.

  • The Kultfabrik (cult factory), is a vast entertainment district, with over 20 bars, clubs, and discos. After 2005, most operators will move to a new site in Fröttmaning next to the new Allianz Arena.

  • Outstanding contemporary art exhibitions.

  • Meeting place for artists at the turn of the 19th century, the Künstlerhaus (1892–1900) on Lenbachhaus features a Möven-pick café and restaurant on the ground floor.

  • Department store with a great selection of fashion, lingerie, stationery, and music.

  • Barkeeper Ernst Lechthaler has created a celebrity watering hole with a healthy helping of ordinary folk mixed in. It is next door to the elegant Hotel Vierjahreszeiten. Excellent cocktails and cigars are served up in a colonial-style ambience.

  • French cuisine perfected by the Werneckhof team for over 20 years – now in a new location with a patio.
