Munich

Of the city he lived in for many years, 20th-century writer Thomas Mann said that “Munich glows”. And indeed, the sky is often a brilliant blue dotted with puffy white clouds in “Italy’s northernmost city”, where the relaxed, often Baroque lifestyle gives it a southern flair. Englischer Garten and the Isar meadows are right in the middle of the city; Starnberger See and the mountains are virtually on the doorstep. But Munich is also a city of art and culture with an abundance of historic buildings, museum treasures, and a lively cultural scene. Fine art, leisure, and la dolce vita make this a unique city.

For Munich on the Internet, visit www.muenchen.de With 1.3 million inhabitants, Munich is Germany’s third-largest city.
  • The city’s oldest Italian restaurant is tranquil and understated. Wonderful small courtyard.

  • South of Lake Starnberg near Seeshaupt, travellers will find the delightful Osterseen, a group of some 20 small moor-land lakes that are among the warmest in Bavaria. This is a perfect spot to go for swimming and peaceful walks in a nature reserve.

  • Family-oriented beer garden with a restaurant in the Englischer Garten offering Bavarian cuisine. Usually crowded.

  • Falckenberg (1873–1947), artistic director of the Münchner Kammerspiele (1917–44).

  • Hangout of FC Bayern football club players and other celebrities, with a reputation that reaches far beyond Munich. Extremely strict doormen are infamous for refusing entry to “ordinary folk.” On weekdays, P1 feels like a lounge rather than a nightclub.

  • This nightclub, consisting of two floors with a restaurant, is perfect for a night of dancing with a Spanish flavour.

  • Small, first-class hotel near the Prinzregententheater with 74 rooms and suites furnished with a French flair. Garden, restaurant, and bar, as well as fitness area and rooftop patio.

  • Archaeopteryx bavarica , a prehistoric bird, is a highlight at this dinosaur museum.

  • Opened in 1998, the restaurant lies 100 m (330 ft) below Wall-berg’s summit (1,700 m/5,650 ft). Spectacular view of the Alps and Tegernsee.

  • Fine Japanese paper and accessories, paper lanterns, paper baskets, and more.
