  • Munich’s “Window on the World of Theatre” presents theatre productions from around the world at various venues, usually with a focus on one country each season.

  • Children carry lanterns in processions led by a rider dressed as St Martin. Roast goose is traditional at dinner.

  • Cultural events between Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz.

  • Since “liquids don’t count during fast-time,” monks brewed a nourishing ale during the lenten fast, a tradition that has survived to this day. Bavaria’s “fifth season” is launched by the ceremonial breaching of bock beer barrels, the most famous being the Salvator breaching on Nockherberg.

  • Thanksgiving and Kirchweih (consecration of churches) fall on the same day. The Auer Herbstdult (see Auer Dulten) often begins on Thanksgiving, as does the Almabtrieb , when the cattle are driven from Alpine summer pastures.

  • The longest open-air festival in the world – according to The Guinness Book of Records – has had to scale back. Nevertheless, the programme still boasts 24 days of free musical entertainment under the open skies in the Olympiapark amphitheatre. The concerts range from rock and pop to classical music.

  • This lively festival is held twice a year, in summer and winter with music, dance, and theatre in tents. Formerly an alternative event, it has matured into a major festival with a wide-ranging programme of performances, vendors, and beverage and food stalls.

  • For a special experience, be sure to visit the Viktualienmarkt, founded in 1807. Formerly a farmers’ market, it has evolved into a shopping destination for gourmets. From Monday to Saturday, you will find daily offerings of fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, eggs, honey, and flowers, as well as exotic spices and other speciality foods. The market also features a small beer garden under the maypole and several fountains with sculptures portraying popular characters from Munich’s history.

  • A home-grown talent and local favourite (1926–90), he was a successful stage actor and adman for Paulaner beer.

  • Christmas markets are a long-standing and utterly charming tradition here. The largest is held on Marienplatz, while those located in Schwabing and Haidhausen offer the best atmosphere.
