  • Biggest cycling race of the year in Munich (6 days, mid-Nov), held at the Olympiahalle.

  • Set off at the eastern end of Westpark at the corner of Hansastr. and Baumgartnerstr. Walk west through the park grounds until you reach a footbridge, which links the eastern and western sections. Special features of the park include artful Asian garden landscapes and a restaurant (with beer garden) next to a rose garden.

  • During the 19th century, the former botanical garden was located in this small park. Today, it serves as the perfect oasis to relax in after a shopping spree in the nearby pedestrian zone and city centre.

  • This park lies directly behind the statue of Bavaria and the Ruhmeshalle, and stretches westward on the Theresienhöhe. It was designed by order of Ludwig I and received its current name after the Bavaria statue was completed in 1850. It is an ideal place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the Oktoberfest.

  • Munich’s several indoor facilities ensure that the ever-increasing number of enthusiasts can play, no matter what the weather.

  • Golf tournament (Aug) held at the Munich Nord-Eichenried club.

  • This is a high-calibre tennis tournament in spring, put on by MTTC Iphitos e.V.

  • This is one of the most important botanical gardens in the world. Created in the park at Nymphenburg in 1914, some 14,000 plant species from around the globe are cultivated here. In the greenhouses, visitors can embark on journeys to tropical rainforests or arid deserts.

  • With the magnificent Alps on the doorstep, rock climbers have plenty of opportunities to indulge in their passion. Munich also offers several artificial climbing walls to practise on before heading off to try out a real rock face.

  • Home to one of the best cycling-path networks in Europe, Munich has several “green lungs,” where you can enjoy a bike ride without the nuisance of car exhaust fumes and noise (see Walks & Cycling Tours). Check with the ADFC (the German cycling association) for a wide selection of cycling tours in and around Munich.
