  • In winter on the hills of the Olympiapark.

  • This Munich football club is called the “Lions” by their fans.

  • The best-known ski jump tournament in the world, held New Year’s week in Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck, and Bischofshofen.

  • Before setting off from Schloss Nymphenburg, take your bearings from one of the many park plans posted near the entrance. An attractive route is a pavilion circuit – Pagodenburg, the cascades, the Temple of Apollo, Badenburg, and Amalienburg – and back to the palace. Round out your walk with a visit to the Museum Mensch und Natur or the Botanical Gardens.

  • From the Haus der Kunst, walk north through the beautiful section of the park that was landscaped 200 years ago. At Kleinhesseloher See, a footbridge takes you over a highway into the newer section of the park and to your final destination, the utterly charming Aumeister beer garden.

  • Munich and the nearby lake region are a haven for anyone who enjoys water sports, from swimming, rowing, or sailing to canoeing. There are outdoor pools, reservoir lakes, small idyllic moor lakes, and countless other lakes dotting Upper Bavaria.

  • Munich offers a wide range of wellness facilities, from day spas to organic supermarkets to wellness centres. The Turkish bath in the Mathilden-Bad is a well-known and popular spot.

  • An expanse of 72 hectares (178 acres) has been landscaped with numerous artificial hills, paths, a lake, and ponds. Created for the International Garden Exhibition in 1983, the western section of the park features an impressive East Asian ensemble with Chinese and Japanese gardens, and Thai and Nepalese pagodas. Concerts, plays, and open-air film screenings are presented on the lakeside stage in summer.

  • The city and its environs attract all winter-sports fans, whether you like skiing, skating, snowboarding, or tobogganing. With such a wide variety of winter sports, there’s something for everyone here.

  • One of the best ways to enjoy Zugspitze is to take a round trip from the base of the mountain on the mountain train and cable cars. In Garmisch, the journey begins on a funicular, which takes you to the Schneeferner glacier on the Zugspitzplatt. Here you switch to a cable car, which ascends to the summit (2,950 m/9,700 ft). The observation platform affords a spectacular panoramic vista – in clear weather, all the way to the Dolomites in Italy. Take the Eibsee cable car on your return trip down to the valley – you’ll be treated once again to wonderful views of Eibsee, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Werdenfelser Land.
