  • 1. Schumann’s

Munich’s top bar since 1982, now in a new location on the Hofgarten. Most tables are reserved for regulars, so be sure to book one in advance. Although the menu is limited, every item on it is delicious. Charles Schumann’s fried potatoes and steak are famous.

  • 2. L-Bar

Barkeeper Ernst Lechthaler has created a celebrity watering hole with a healthy helping of ordinary folk mixed in. It is next door to the elegant Hotel Vierjahreszeiten. Excellent cocktails and cigars are served up in a colonial-style ambience.

  • 3. Hongkong Bar

Sip an exotic drink at the 40-m- (130-ft-) long bar while enjoying the Far Eastern atmosphere. Imaginatively prepared Asian dishes are the mainstay in the adjoining dining room. Mixed clientele.

  • 4. Julep’s

Rustic American ambience with barkeepers who are trained to mix some 200 cocktails, although you can also simply stand at the counter and drink a beer straight out of the bottle. Classics such as lobster and Tex-Mex dishes characterize the menu in the dining area.

  • 5. Pusser’s

One of the latest American-style bars in Munich, with a maritime decor. Cocktail highlights are the various rum-based creations. In addition, there’s a wide selection of whiskies, Guinness, and Ayinger beer. Drop in to the piano bar for classic bar food and Caribbean dishes.

  • 6. Bar Centrale

Italian bar open day and night. At the front, where there are also a few tables on the pavement, the air is filled with the heady aroma of espresso, while 1960s decor dominates the area at the rear. Outstanding cocktails, pasta dishes, and bar snacks.

  • 7. Tambosi

Historic 220-year-old coffee house in the Hofgarten, open morning to night. Take a seat at an antique table inside and be transported back to the 19th century. In summer, there are two patios, one on Odeonsplatz, the other beneath linden trees on the Hofgarten side. Live music is occasionally performed by music students.

  • 8. Café Ruffini

A Munich institution – wholesome breakfasts should be this delicious everywhere. Bread and cakes are made in the café’s own bakery. Tables on the roof patio are highly sought. There are nightly concerts or literary readings.

  • 9. Café Luitpold

Traditional daytime café offering homemade pralines and cakes, as well as tasty meals. The kitchen closes at 7pm. Pretty courtyard and stunning conservatory.

  • 10. Café Frischhut

A favourite with hungover night owls, this café opens at 5am and serves fresh, deep-fried baked goods, doughnuts, and other goodies.
