New York

With its skyscrapers, great museums, and bright lights of Broadway, New York is a city of superlatives. There are countless sights that have to be seen, but a handful are truly definitive of the city. These highlights illustrate the very best.

  • Everyone from Robin Williams to Ice T has appeared in this Village landmark.

  • Just to walk into this chapel, New York’s oldest public building, is to enter a world of grace and reverent serenity. The concerts held on Mondays at 1pm offer a chance for visitors to revel in the beauty of the setting and the music (see St. Paul’s Chapel).

  • The 48-story tower, built in 1999, is striking and environmentally friendly, with photovoltaic cells on the façade and integrated recycling chutes.

  • Coney Island/ New York Aquarium

Although a bit frayed since its early 1900s heyday, Coney Island is still home to the landmark ferris wheel and rollercoaster rides, and the long sandy beach and beachside boardwalk. The excellent New York Aquarium, along the boardwalk, is an indoor and outdoor complex where whales, walruses, and dolphins play, and finny creatures range from sharks to seahorses. Worth the trip, this is a great family day’s outing (see New York Aquarium).

  • Three formal gardens inside Central Park.

  • Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum

Design authority of USA, part of the Smithsonian Institution, devoted to historic and contemporary design with a 6,500 rare book collection.

  • Serious dancers come to one of the best clubs for Latin music from Tuesday to Saturday. No sneakers.

  • Take your pick of Southern classics at this popular spot; don’t miss the Sunday gospel brunch.

  • No pretension, and a 35-ft (11-m) aquarium featuring mer-people.

  • Pita bread warm from the oven laden with your choice of fillings, including ham, chicken, or roasted peppers. Part of a chain.
