With its skyscrapers, great museums, and bright lights of Broadway, New York is a city of superlatives. There are countless sights that have to be seen, but a handful are truly definitive of the city. These highlights illustrate the very best.
-
Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s namesake restaurant is among the best in New York.
-
Already a culinary star from his earlier Jo Jo and Vong restaurants, Jean-Georges Vongerichten in his namesake restaurant turns out food that is among the very best in New York, transformed by the French master’s delicate sauces and creative combinations. Designer Adam Tihany has created a polished, almost austere, setting that does not upstage the four-star chef.

The site was a market in 1833, named after the former president, Thomas Jefferson. The fire lookout tower had a giant bell that alerted volunteer firefighters. When the courthouse was built in 1877, the bell was installed in its clock tower. The building became a treasured Village landmark, and, after the market had moved and court sessions were discontinued, it was eventually saved from demolition after a spirited local campaign and converted into a branch of the New York Public Library in the 1950s.
-
Bar/ restaurant with spooky gothic horror theme - the kids love it. Best bit is trying to find the loos with a concealed door! Fun place with friendly staff and not too busy in the afternoon
-
A shrine to boxing: the walls are lined with fight posters, photos and other personal effects that owner and professional trainer Jimmy Glenn has pasted up over nearly thirty years (look for the shots of Jimmy with Ali). The house drink, Jimmy's Hurricane, is an blend of spiced rum, juices and amaretto. Visitors are Times Square regulars and few tourists. The beer is always cold and Jimmy himself is usually on hand - topping up the jukebox.
-
This enormous, glittery room is packed on weekends for the amazing selection of dim sum. Point at your choices as the carts roll by and ignore the din.
-
Cute old fashioned diner that does THE BEST BACON!!! Do not have what they call "Canadian bacon" though, its Spam. Quiet, unassuming and just what you need to start the day.
-
This swanky oasis attached to the Public Theater hosts an eclectic range of well-known and emerging artists, from jazz to rock, hip hop, and lounge. A DJ usually finishes the night.
-
The Chinatown branch of the Flushing restaurant famous for its soup dumplings (look for steamed buns on the menu).
-
The original of this Chinese café chain is popular for its pork or crab soup dumplings, or “steamed buns.” There’s also a menu of Shanghai specialties.
-
