  • Gorgeous little restaurant in the heart of Greenwich Village. The food feels essentially Italian but the atmosphere is most definitely hip Greenwich Village. But this restaurant isn't the pretentious beautiful hangout it could be, its a popular local that serves great food.

  • Upstairs at the justifiably famous supermarket, there is the best place for breakfast or brunch in New York. I suggest the cream cheese, skallion and tomato scrambled eggs on brioche with a gallon of coffee: once a week I allow myself their pancakes with maple syrup and, as a concession to health, blueberries. Bliss.

  • The bountiful antipasto bar is good enough reason to visit, but the thin-crust pizzas and Italian menu are equally tempting.

  • An intimate modern French restaurant with a small menu that shows meticulous dedication.

  • A mix of Peruvian, Cuban, and Chinese cuisine; Peruvian-style rotisserie chicken is a specialty.

  • This three-hour tour of Greenwich Village is led by a competent guide (ours had a terrific sense of humour) who describes the history of the Village and provides an insight into life in this bustling area. The food is wonderful and consists of varied tasters of local and international cuisine, both sweet and savoury. Although it is more of a gentle stroll than a walk, there is little opportunity to sit down, so comfortable footwear is recommended.

  • An award-winning New York institution with landmark decor and great celebrity spotting opportunities.

  • Restaurants come and go but this New York institution with landmark decor by Philip Johnson seems to go on forever, and it is always among the top-rated for Continental food. The Grill Room is still the prime place for power lunches, and the Pool Room is a perfect setting for special occasion dinners.

  • This recently reopened 19th-century tavern is the former home of George Washington. The site features a restaurant and museum.

  • Sophisticated Tuscan food keeps this stylish room filled with Lincoln Center-goers at night.
