Top 10 Neighborhood Hotels
-
1. Lucerne
The Upper West Side offers excellent value, and the Lucerne, housed in a 1903 building, is top of the list. It has a comfortable lobby, business and fitness centers, a rooftop terrace, and tasteful rooms with many amenities.
-
2. Excelsior
A lavish, old-world lobby fronts a recently refurbished, well-appointed hotel with traditional decor, many suites, in-room computers and fax machines. A breakfast room, library, outdoor decks, and media room are among other features.
-
3. Hotel Beacon
Named for the famous theater next door (see Beacon Theatre), the Beacon is a relaxed, comfortable hotel, with generous rooms with standard decor, and, a big plus, kitchenettes with refrigerators and microwaves.
-
4. Mayflower
The location, a short walk from Lincoln Center, is a big attraction, drawing performers to this long-time standby. The hotel is overdue for refurbishment, but the rooms are comfortable enough and offer kitchenettes. Views from those facing the park are prime.
-
5. Empire Hotel
Lincoln Center is across the street from this refurbished hotel with an impressive lobby and small but decently decorated rooms. There’s a tape and CD library for in-room players, plus a café, good for pre-concert dining.
-
6. Franklin
The most affordable lodging on the Upper East Side, the Franklin offers style rather than size, with sleek furnishings and compact rooms. The hotel serves complimentary breakfast and cappuccino, espresso, and tea all day.
-
7. Chelsea Savoy
An excellent neighborhood lodging, close to Chelsea’s shops, flea markets, cafés, and galleries. Pleasantly furnished rooms are a decent size, with all the necessary amenities, and the bathrooms are new.
-
8. Best Western Seaport Inn
Close to South Street Seaport, this restored 19th-century building has the predictable rooms of a chain hotel, but a cozy lobby. All 72 rooms have VCRs and refrigerators, and breakfast is included.
-
9. Washington Square Hotel
A haven in the heart of Greenwich Village. Rooms are tiny, hallways painfully narrow, but the decor pleasant, continental breakfast is included, and you can say you stayed where Bob Dylan and Joan Baez once hung out.
-
10. 60 Thompson
SoHo’s new, 12-story luxury hotel has 100 rooms, elegantly decked out with custom furnishings. Guests can enjoy the view from the roof garden or watch the neighborhood scene from the sidewalk café.
