Orlando

One word describes Orlando’s transformation in the last three decades: stunning. The city and its suburbs have gone through a Cinderella-like metamorphosis, where plain Jane has become a worldly beauty. Millions of tourists are seduced every year by sophisticated resorts, a wide range of theme parks, must-see attractions, happening nightclubs, and winning restaurants. Here are Orlando’s best of the best.

  • Live oaks and yellow pines surround this lovely wooded resort, modeled on the Yosemite Lodge at Yosemite National Park. Some rooms overlook woodlands; the villas are roomy and come with kitchens.

  • The theme here is New England yacht club. Some of the 630 nautical-style rooms have views over a lake. Guests can walk to Epcot in about 10 minutes.

  • This deep discount outlet carries everything needed for underwater adventures. The helpful sales team give good advice.

  • This is a bit like free-falling in a metal harness. As your legs dangle free and you bob to a stop, you’ll probably be screaming at the top of your lungs. (Islands of Adventure).

  • After being welcomed with home-made cookies, head to your cozy one- or two-bedroomed suite at this official Disney hotel. With a landscaped pool and a spa, you can’t fail to relax.

  • A $16 million renovation helped convert this former convention hotel into one that woos travelers who want to be near the Universal parks. The hotel’s two towers house 742 modern rooms and suites; those on the west side overlook the parks and CityWalk.

  • The towering spires of this themed hotel make it look like a fairytale castle – if castles came in pink and blue, that is. Its 216 rooms and seven suites come with big-screen TVs and Sony Playstations. The resort has a roof terrace, a fitness center, and two restaurants.

  • There are two shopping options in Downtown Disney. On the glittery West Side is the massive Virgin Megastore, George’s Guitar Gallery, and more than a dozen one-of-a kind shops. The more serene Marketplace is highlighted by World of Disney (the planet’s largest Disney store) and the LEGO Imagination Center, a massive superstore.

  • With three parts – Westside, Pleasure Island, and Marketplace – glittering Downtown Disney has become the epicenter of nightlife at “the Mouse”. Although Pleasure Island and its nightclubs boast the most obvious party appeal, both Westside and Marketplace are also packed day and night. Hordes of guests (especially families) stroll among the area’s shops and restaurants – it’s bustling, fun, and costs little to enjoy. Kids in particular like the LEGO Store’s (see LEGO Imagination Center) outdoor work stations.

  • Probably Disney’s best spot for night owls, with lots of bars and clubs to choose from.
