Orlando

One word describes Orlando’s transformation in the last three decades: stunning. The city and its suburbs have gone through a Cinderella-like metamorphosis, where plain Jane has become a worldly beauty. Millions of tourists are seduced every year by sophisticated resorts, a wide range of theme parks, must-see attractions, happening nightclubs, and winning restaurants. Here are Orlando’s best of the best.

More on the Top 10 sights in Orlando (see Thrill Rides)
  • Broadway fans love this place, with songs by Rodgers & Hammerstein, George M. Cohan, and other legends. It’s no rival to the London or New York stages, but it’s a good show. A varied menu feeds the parts the songs can’t reach.

  • Dive at Florida’s most spectacular crystal clear inland springs and rivers, which boast 200 ft (61 m) visibility and a wide variety of marine life. Swim with manatees, turtles and catfish or enter the ‘grand ballroom’ 100 ft (30 m) below the surface in a cavern dive. Gear rental, transportation, and lessons are available.

  • A guide in 19th-century costume holds a lantern and tries his best to spook his willing participants, while leading this 90-minute walking tour. Groups of up to 25 people hear tales of murder, morbidity, and ghost sightings, and as an added bonus, the guide recounts wonderful anecdotes and information about the architecture and history of Downtown’s most interesting buildings.

  • With over 500 performances in 10 days, the Fringe offers improvised comedy, drag shows, stand-up, and more. Inspired by the Edinburgh festival, this premier event draws enthusiastic local crowds.

  • Don’t miss the NBA team if it’s the season.

  • Following a multi-million dollar makeover in 1997, the Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) has earned a reputation as one of the southeast’s top arts museums. The fine permanent collection is dominated by pre-Columbian art and American artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, George Inness, and Robert Rauschenberg. These works are supplemented by touring exhibitions from major metropolitan museums, and numerous smaller shows of regional or local significance, although curators tend to avoid overtly controversial works. (see Orlando Museum of Art (OMA)).

  • The focus of exhibitions in this big, bright museum is American art from the 19th century onward, art from the ancient Americas and Africa, and block-buster traveling shows. On the first Thursday evening of every month, you can also enjoy music, food, and the work of local artists for an inventively themed get-together.

  • This respected company has been producing opera since 1979. The season (Nov–Apr) is not long – four main shows for three dates each at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center – but the quality of productions is high, with principle singers brought in from around the country and with music from the Orlando Phil. Smaller shows are also on offer at the Dr. Phillips Center. Ticket prices are very reasonable.

  • Orlando’s resident orchestra boasts more than 80 conservatory-trained musicians. Venues vary, and include the Phil’s home at Symphony Square, Leu Gardens (for outdoor concerts), and even SeaWorld. Its best-known showcase is the “Phil at Carr”, an eight-concert series (Sep–May) at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center, with guest artists in both classical and pop concerts.

  • Grab a chance to support the local arena football team.
