Orlando

One word describes Orlando’s transformation in the last three decades: stunning. The city and its suburbs have gone through a Cinderella-like metamorphosis, where plain Jane has become a worldly beauty. Millions of tourists are seduced every year by sophisticated resorts, a wide range of theme parks, must-see attractions, happening nightclubs, and winning restaurants. Here are Orlando’s best of the best.

  • This swinging nightclub is located within the Rosen Plaza Hotel on International Drive. Dance the night away to live bands and top DJs who play popular hits from the 1970s, the 1980s and the 1990s. Valet parking is also available.

  • Trust the Caribbean menu and spirits to create some fun, but expect to wait up to two hours for a table.

  • The draw here is the fresh and healthy Californian and Mexican cusine, with tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, and burritos, stuffed with lean meat and sour cream and cheese.

  • A bakery that doubles as a bar by night. The bakery is open six days (not Sundays) to 5pm, and the bar opens at 6pm Thursday to Saturday.

  • Bar-B-Q Bar

It’s little more than an average beer joint with sticky floors and loud crowds, but Bar-B-Q is the place to see and be seen for the more creative set. A favorite venue with local musicians, the bar gets packed whenever there’s a good band on stage. People-watch clubbers cruising the Orange Avenue strip from a sidewalk table.

  • The doorway to this shop is straddled by a large flying saucer. Alighting from a nearby rocket-ship is a giant green Martian wearing casual clothes and holding a stick – no doubt to root out those bargains.

  • Overflowing with fishing, golf, camping, and hunting supplies, plus footwear and apparel, this is a vast shrine to the great outdoors.

  • Golf legend host, Arnie Palmer, plus players like Tiger Woods are the draw.

  • Beach Tree Villas

Great for families, the Beach Tree has two- to five-bedroom homes, the larger of which have private pools. There’s an on-site recreation center, sauna, and a tennis court, but rates don’t include an extra cleaning fee. Villas have a four-night minimum stay; houses have a five-night minimum.

  • It’s around a 30-minute drive from downtown Orlando, but if you’re mobile, or staying in the north of the city, your reward is a soothing retreat. Services include massages (Swedish, prenatal, and aromatherapy); body wraps (mud, seaweed, and heat); and facials (European and anti-oxidant).
