Orlando

One word describes Orlando’s transformation in the last three decades: stunning. The city and its suburbs have gone through a Cinderella-like metamorphosis, where plain Jane has become a worldly beauty. Millions of tourists are seduced every year by sophisticated resorts, a wide range of theme parks, must-see attractions, happening nightclubs, and winning restaurants. Here are Orlando’s best of the best.

More on the Top 10 sights in Orlando (see Thrill Rides)
  • Sushi Hatsu

Central Florida’s freshest and best sushi and sashimi come from this tiny, family-run operation. Cooked Japanese dishes are also available.

  • Swan Boats In Lake Eola

Tucked under the blossoming skyline of downtown Orlando, Lake Eola Park is a charming city oasis (see Lake Eola Park). Those seeking some (inexpensive) time alone can rent a two-person Swan Boat (propelled by pedal power) and cruise about on the lake. (see Lake Eola Park).

  • Few natural thrills compare to snorkeling or scuba diving with these gentle, endangered giants, sometimes called sea cows. The manatees frequent the springs and rivers of West Citrus County (about two hours drive north of St. Petersburg) much of the year, but even more so from November through March. Several outfits offer various two-hour trips.

  • Most of Orlando’s hotels have their own pools, but for a change of scene and a place to swim serious lengths, try an aquatic center. (see YMCA Aquatic Center).

  • Tabu

This cavernous former theater is a dark and trendy magnet, largely for 20-somethings on the prowl. The music favors house and breakbeat.

  • Tabu

Co-owned by one of the Back-street Boys, this former theater is now a darkly stylish and cavernous club. The main floor boasts two large bars, a big dance floor, and video screens. Occasionally, the old upstairs balcony is transformed into a late-night sushi bar, and the lobby sometimes has a roster of supporting DJs. Lines can be long, especially when there’s a big-name DJ or PA on.

  • Tarantino’s Italian Restaurant

This delightful Italian spot wins praise for charming ambience and well-prepared Italian classics.

  • Disney’s Contemporary Resort has six hydrogrid courts and its Grand Floridian Resort & Spa has two clay ones. The nearby Grand Cypress Raquet Club has 12 courts, four of them all-weather.

  • This place serves the best tom kha gai (spicy chicken soup with coconut milk) and pad thai (rice noodles with chicken, shrimp, and peanuts) in North Orlando.

  • More high-tech than Universal Studios’ Back to the Future, but tamer than the Dragon and Hulk coasters. Still, it’s not for those with heart problems or motion sickness tendencies. Use the single line if alone or can split from your group – it’s quicker. (Islands of Adventure).
