Orlando

One word describes Orlando’s transformation in the last three decades: stunning. The city and its suburbs have gone through a Cinderella-like metamorphosis, where plain Jane has become a worldly beauty. Millions of tourists are seduced every year by sophisticated resorts, a wide range of theme parks, must-see attractions, happening nightclubs, and winning restaurants. Here are Orlando’s best of the best.

More on the Top 10 sights in Orlando (see Thrill Rides)
  • This city park is more urban oasis than rustic countryside retreat. It features lots of facilities such as basketball, tennis, and sand volleyball courts, and picnic areas with grills for a barbecue. Kids will appreciate the well-equipped playground.

  • This café serves great salads and Middle-Eastern-inspired fare in a former antiques store. It also sells most of its vintage furnishings.

  • Will’s Loch Haven Pub

This tiny dive has earned a reputation among local musicians for being one of the best-loved music clubs in town, with a line-up of punk, ska, and alternative rock bands. The back room stage is small and the ceiling low, but the PA is loud and the beer list huge. The front room has a pool table, and there’s a patio out front in case fresh air is required.

  • Good Chinese food is rare in these parts. Winnie’s, with its inventive menu, is a find. Try the Peking duck, or the salt and pepper shrimp.

  • Some farmers’ markets are serious business, packed with old trucks and farmers selling mountains of vegetables just pulled from the earth. The Winter Park Farmers’ Market is altogether a different affair. More of a social gathering on the village green, Winter Park’s yuppies come here to mingle, buy potted flowers. preserves, and herbs, and indulge in fresh croissants, muffins, and breads. Yes, the required vegetables are here, too, but this is more of a coffee and brunch gathering.

  • Glide through three of Winter Park’s lakes on a pontoon boat for this hour-long tour. Nature-lovers can spot birds such as ospreys and herons. The more materialistic can swoon over huge lake-side mansions, sometimes getting close enough to peek in a window. The architecture of Rollins College, and the secluded feel of the canals, make this tour a popular option for the kitsch-weary.

  • Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour

The wealthiest sections of Winter Park were built by a series of lakes and along small, winding canals. This boat tour has been running since 1938, and is part nature trip and part local history lesson. It cruises lazily past Winter Park landmarks and lakeside mansions encountering wildlife, while the skipper tells stories about the area’s legendary society crowd.

  • For three days, this prestigious outdoor festival sees hundreds of artists exhibit on sidewalk stalls. Traffic comes to a standstill as massive crowds mill around and ponder purchases.

  • Grilled pizza, spicy tuna rolls, and pumpkin risotto are some of the eclectic options made here by the acclaimed California chef.

  • Every weekday at 1:30pm, Alice in Wonderland characters join guests in the Grand Floridian resort for tea and cakes.
