  • The three-story Beach Club was once a roller rink. Now it’s where rock fans do their thing, drinking beers amid the video games and pool tables. A DJ and earnest cover band provide the entertainment.

  • A downtown favorite, SAK is Orlando’s home of improvisation comedy. Shows are always funny and inventive, and there are two per night. The 8pm shows are usually family-friendly, while the later ones get a bit edgier, although obscene material is strictly avoided. Of particular interest are the series shows, such as Foolish Hearts , an ongoing, improvised soap opera.

  • Sleuth’s Mystery Dinner Theatre

The theater’s cast stages eight different shows over the course of a month, all with a suspicious death and a twist before the mystery is uncovered. Meals include hors d’oeuvres before the show, then your choice of honey-glazed Cornish game hen, prime rib, or lasagna with side dishes, dessert, and unlimited beer, wine, and sodas.

  • High-energy performers from Hawaii, New Zealand, and Tahiti show off their hula, ceremonial, and fire-dancing in an open-air theater. Meanwhile, tuck into the all-you-can-eat meal, which includes roast pork and chicken, fried rice, vegetables, and fruit. Learn how to make leis and do the hula in the pre-show.

  • The lounge music craze that swept the nation a few years ago has almost vanished, leaving only serious practitioners. This elegant hotel bar is a swell place to sip cocktails and dig the duet in evening dress who sing near the $250,000 Bösendorfer Grand piano. Maybe it’s the heavy drapes, the dark wood, or the well-tuned ennui of some patrons, but you feel wealthy just being here.

  • This powerhouse dance club has slamming DJs, as well as several quiet chill-out lounges.

  • The Social (formerly known as Sapphire) serves up an eclectic mix of live music. Sounds range from alternative rock to funk, jazz, and dance, with local DJs also gracing the club’s legendary stage. For years, the club’s policy of booking top national touring acts meant it was the shining light of Orlando’s live music scene. Competition from much larger clubs is stiffer now, but this tiny spot, with its stylishly raw decor, remains O-Town’s favorite spot to enjoy live music.

  • Recently named Orlando’s Best Local Repertory Company, this volunteer organization has been producing first-rate shows since 1984. In 1989, it moved to a former appliance store, and in this casual setting has presented an array of classics, contemporary works (such as David Mamet’s American Buffalo ), and new plays by local writers.

  • Will’s Loch Haven Pub

This tiny dive has earned a reputation among local musicians for being one of the best-loved music clubs in town, with a line-up of punk, ska, and alternative rock bands. The back room stage is small and the ceiling low, but the PA is loud and the beer list huge. The front room has a pool table, and there’s a patio out front in case fresh air is required.

  • XS Orlando

The ultimate games room is in this entertainment mecca, with DJs, bars, food, and over 110 of the latest interactive games. Their motto? “Too much is not enough.”
