Top 10 Sports & Outdoor Activities
-
1. Horseback Riding
Saddle up for 45-minute trail rides at Grand Cypress Resort’s state-of-the-art equestrian center. There are horses suitable for all abilities of rider, and lessons are available in Western or English riding styles.
-
2. Tennis
Disney’s Contemporary Resort has six hydrogrid courts and its Grand Floridian Resort & Spa has two clay ones. The nearby Grand Cypress Raquet Club has 12 courts, four of them all-weather.
-
3. Cycling
Get away on Disney’s scenic bike trails. You can rent single, multi-speed, and kids’ bikes at the Fort Wilderness Resort’s Bike Barn. Tandems and cycles with baby seats and training wheels are also available.
-
4. NFL Experience
No matter if you’re unfit or have never caught a forward pass. At Disney’s Wide World of Sports, you can be a gridiron star for the day and take part in a program designed to make you an American football hero – minus the bruises and bleeding.
-
5. Swimming
Most of Orlando’s hotels have their own pools, but for a change of scene and a place to swim serious lengths, try an aquatic center. (see YMCA Aquatic Center).
-
6. Boating
The man-made lakes around Walt Disney World are perfect for idling away an afternoon. Several of the resorts have small motor-boats and pontoon boats for hire. There are also paddle-boats for people who like a more rigorous work-out.
-
7. Watersports
Test your water-skiing legs at one of Sammy Duvall’s Water Sports Centers (which also offers parasailing and wake-boarding). Buena Vista Watersports (which also charters and rents boats) is another option. (see Buena Vista Watersports).
-
8. Surfing
In land-locked Orlando? You bet. According to the state’s surf addicts, who sometimes rent the park after hours, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon has wave-making down to a fine art. But you don’t have to be a pro to give it a try. Carroll’s Cocoa Beach Surfing School puts on a twice-weekly class for beginners.
-
9. Fishing
Land your dinner (and a fish story) with Pro Bass Guide Service, a Winter Garden outfit that specializes in guided bass-fishing. Local and regional trips to some of Central Florida’s most picturesque rivers and lakes are on offer (pick-up can be arranged), as are offshore expeditions for saltwater species, such as redfish and sea trout.
-
10. Hayrides
For something a little more unusual in the way of outdoor fun, try a 45-minute hay wagon ride around Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. Expect some singing and dancing, and a good-time atmosphere that makes for a relaxing end to the day. One of Disney’s most popular campground experiences.
