Paris

From Notre-Dame to the Eiffel Tower, Paris holds some of the world's most famous sights and these highlights should be top of the list for any first-time visitor. With the exception of the overtly modern Pompidou Centre, they have been landmarks of this elegant and romantic capital for centuries and remain awe-inspiring sights, no matter how often you visit the city.

More on guided tours in Paris
  • This charming and touching grave shows Charles Pigeon and his wife in bed, reading by the light of the gas lamp he invented.

  • Art Deco brasserie, specializing in seafood.

  • Charming jewelry boutique

This cute little jewelry shop features unique one-of-a-kind items all hand made in Paris. Lots of wonderful pieces full of colour and fantasy!

  • A wonderfully authentic Parisian restaurant, dating back over 200 years, serving simple french dishes in original surroundings. Not fancy or expensive, but nonetheless delightful. Well worth a visit.

  • Chartier

The food is simple and filling (pepper steak, tarragon chicken and fish are traditional examples) but the real reason to come here is for the authentic period atmosphere. This early 20th-century workers’ canteen has retained its original, tightly packed tables set amid wood panelling and gilded mirrors. It’s always busy so come early to get a table. No reservations are taken, but the inevitable queues usually move quickly.

  • Waiters race back and forth serving simple soups, meat and fish dishes. No bookings

  • At the same time as he re-designed central Paris (see The Second Empire), Baron Haussmann created the Bois de Boulogne. This chateau was given to Haussmann as a thank-you from Napoleon III.

  • The two sphinxes of this 1808 fountain commemorate Napoleon’s victory in Egypt.

  • The food in Paris is always overpriced and when you have children in tow, it can be hard to find them something they like. Whilst at the Eiffel Tower this year though, we all enjoyed the most wonderful crepes from the little stalls just outside from the tower, overlooking the view, fantastic for those on a budget and with children, as there was so many versions and flavours for everyone.

  • This halfway house between an Alsatian brasserie and a Savoyard bistro will surprise the palate.
