Paris

From Notre-Dame to the Eiffel Tower, Paris holds some of the world's most famous sights and these highlights should be top of the list for any first-time visitor. With the exception of the overtly modern Pompidou Centre, they have been landmarks of this elegant and romantic capital for centuries and remain awe-inspiring sights, no matter how often you visit the city.

  • Stylish hotel, with the Musée d’Orsay and the Invalides close by. Top floor rooms have great views across the Seine. Paintings line the walls, antique furniture and gilt-lined mirrors abound.

  • If you find your romance in the days of the 18th-century, then this hotel will be perfect. Period furniture and classical music attempt to capture that era. Rooms are beautiful and guests are truly pampered.

  • This sumptuous hotel is located close to many main attractions. It also boasts a renowned restaurant.

  • Hôtel Chopin

Hidden away in one of the city’s passages, the Chopin opened in 1846. At this price don’t expect the best facilities, but it is a pleasant place to stay and the rooms are comfortable. Ask for an upper room for more light.

  • Book a first-floor room overlooking the courtyard for a romantic place to stay. Low lighting and dark furniture add to the mood, as does the Oriental-style swimming pool and trendy restaurant.

  • Surprisingly smart hotel at the budget end of the market. Rooms are brightly decorated, if a little small, but some of the upper ones have views as far as Sacré-Coeur and others overlook the patio garden.

  • This wonderful 1928 mansion may be away from the centre but it oozes class and is filled with antiques. Several rooms have four-poster beds.

  • The young Mozart performed at this 17th-century mansion. Notice the balcony decorated with goats’ heads.

  • Built in 1732 by Jean Sylvain Cartaud, this mansion has housed the Italian Embassy since 1938.

  • This mansion houses the Ministry of Defence, so no photos are allowed. Napoleon’s mother lived here from 1806–17.
