Paris

From Notre-Dame to the Eiffel Tower, Paris holds some of the world's most famous sights and these highlights should be top of the list for any first-time visitor. With the exception of the overtly modern Pompidou Centre, they have been landmarks of this elegant and romantic capital for centuries and remain awe-inspiring sights, no matter how often you visit the city.

More on guided tours in Paris
  • This mansion boasts beautiful early 18th-century architecture, although the right wing dates from the early 1600s.

  • With one of the best locations in Paris, one of the best restaurants and one of the best reputations, the Crillon is for those who enjoy their comforts. From the marble lounge to the light and spacious rooms, the Crillon oozes class.

  • This attractive mansion was built in 1739 with Classical styling. It is now the Italian Institute.

  • Hotel de la Jatte

A small but homely hotel on Ile de la Jatte. The staff are friendly and helpful, speaking perfect English. Rooms overlook the courtyard or the River Seine. The hotel is only a short metro ride away from central Paris (approx. 20 mins including walking into Neuilly-sur-Seine town centre to the stop), but its residential location means it is peaceful overnight. A buffet style breakfast is included. The price is a bargain, and the hotel often has 3 for 2 night deals on over the weekend!

  • A hotel with a great view of the Louvre (see Louvre Collections). Rooms cleverly mix the historical with the modern.

  • Located near the Bois de Vincennes (12ème), this hospitable two-star is perfect for those who know Paris and want local ambience outside "le centre".

  • Built in 1584 for the daughter of Henri II. Note the Greek-style pediment.

  • If you want a cheap central hotel, they come no cheaper nor more central than the Lille, just a minute’s walk from the Louvre Museum. Rooms are clean but basic, and there is no breakfast and no elevator serving the five floors.

  • Hôtel de l’Elysée Faubourg St-Honoré

Some of the rooms at the Elysée have four-poster beds, so if planning a romantic getaway be sure to specify one of these. The public rooms are plush and the hotel is around the corner from the Presidential Palace.

  • In this 17th-century St-Germain mansion, there is a discount for children sharing a room with their parents.
