From Notre-Dame to the Eiffel Tower, Paris holds some of the world's most famous sights and these highlights should be top of the list for any first-time visitor. With the exception of the overtly modern Pompidou Centre, they have been landmarks of this elegant and romantic capital for centuries and remain awe-inspiring sights, no matter how often you visit the city.
More on guided tours in Paris-
Right in the heart of the Bastille district, this nofrills hotel may be a chain but it’s handy for some of the city’s best markets. Rooms are cheaper at weekends.
-
A world away from the usual anonymity of chain hotels, being set in a 19th-century building designed by Charles Garnier, also responsible for the Paris Opéra (see Opéra National de Paris Garnier). The original atmosphere has been retained, but the rooms offer everything you would expect from the name.
-
Book well ahead for a room in the Keppler, with its inexpensive prices in an expensive part of Paris. Rooms are spacious and provide the basic comforts – a few have balconies. The management ensures that cheap prices do not mean cheap service.
-
Pampering is paid for here, but the investment pays off with huge rooms in a 19th-century mansion just a stroll from the Champs-Elysées.
-
Built in 1773 for the Médici family, ancient beams and artworks now combine with modern design for a special place to stay. Rooms are small, but compensations are the garden, adjacent bar, and the location in a quiet street off boulevard St-Michel.
-
Beautiful little hotel in the Latin quarter. Sunken lounge with fire place and bar to relax in before a night out and rooms with wooden beams and lovely decor, great for a romantic weekend away!
-
The flower-filled Lenox is close to Montparnasse cemetery, and despite the price, rooms are clean, with modern facilities. Some are on the small side so ask for a larger room: there is also a top-floor suite.
-
One of the most beautiful mansions in the area, built in 1721, is now the official residence of the French prime minister.
-
The Pergolèse manages to be both modern and welcoming. Couples seeking romance should book the best room, also called the Pergolèse, with its pale colours, skylight roof and luxurious open-plan bathroom.
-
Delightful hotel in an untouristed area of Paris. The rooms are compact but clean. Fifth-floor rooms have balconies; all have TV and phone.
