Paris

From Notre-Dame to the Eiffel Tower, Paris holds some of the world's most famous sights and these highlights should be top of the list for any first-time visitor. With the exception of the overtly modern Pompidou Centre, they have been landmarks of this elegant and romantic capital for centuries and remain awe-inspiring sights, no matter how often you visit the city.

More on guided tours in Paris
  • Quiet, clean, well-priced by Paris standards and very nicely located near the Opera, about two blocks from a Metro stop, and if you want, walk-able to the Louvre and other tourist stops. There are tons of places to eat close by.

  • The Trophée Eric Bompard is the Parisian leg of the International Grand Prix.

  • Italian specialities, such as veal with sage and strawberry soup, are served on a lovely patio in summer

  • Although you could walk end to end in about 10 minutes, the Seine’s smaller island demands a more leisurely stroll. You’ll discover superb little art galleries, trendy boutiques, and a village-like atmosphere within this up-market enclave (see Ile de la Cité and Ile St-Louis).

  • This institute was founded in 1980 to promote cultural relations between France and the Arab world. The stunning building (1987) designed by architect Jean Nouvel features a southern wall of 1,600 photo-sensitive metal screens that open and close like a camera aperture to regulate light entering the building. The design is based on the latticed wooden screens of Islamic architecture. Inside are seven floors of Islamic artworks, from 9th-century ceramics to contemporary art, and ancient astrolabes used by astronomers of old.

  • Players from all over the world compete in this bowls-like game.

  • Show-jumping fans and competitors descend on Paris.

  • An unusual feature is this designated garden which brings together more than 400 different varieties of iris.

  • A designer better known to Parisians than overseas, her work is hip but elegant.

  • One of the best Japanese restaurants in the city, but tiny so book ahead. Good choice of sushi.
