From Notre-Dame to the Eiffel Tower, Paris holds some of the world's most famous sights and these highlights should be top of the list for any first-time visitor. With the exception of the overtly modern Pompidou Centre, they have been landmarks of this elegant and romantic capital for centuries and remain awe-inspiring sights, no matter how often you visit the city.

  • This nightclub has the best of everything, even reggaeton. Just make sure you don't pass out from alcohol poisoning...

  • Food from the Auvergne in huge quantities in this busy and friendly place. Stuffed cabbage is the delicious speciality.

  • If visiting the Bois de Boulogne, include La Gare on the itinerary. This stylish brasserie in a former railway station has a summer terrace and rotisserie-style food.

  • La Grande Arche

    Amazing 110 metre high marble Arch with great views over Paris from the top, which is reached by a transparent tube elevator. Also there, is a huge shopping centre together with a massive paved open area, all surrounded by modern skyscrapers

  • One for the beer lovers, with a dozen or so ales available on tap, including many Belgian brews, and another 100–150 by the bottle. Belgian-biased food as well.

  • Owned by Claude Terrail of the Tour d’rgent, this delightful restaurant offers haute cuisine at affordable prices.

  • Landmark literary hangout. Good collections on art, photography and literature.

  • Next to the Moulin Rouge, this vast club couldn’t be more different, attracting young dancers who want to dance all night.

  • Designed in the style of a Greek temple in 1764, this prominent church in Paris’s financial district, on the edge of the Opéra Quarter, is one of the city’s most distinctive sights, spectacularly surrounded by 52 Corinthian columns. The church was consecrated to Mary Magdalene in 1845. The bronze doors, which include bas-reliefs depicting the Ten Commandments, and the Last Judgment on the south pediment are exterior highlights, while the ornate marble and gold interior has many fine statues, including François Rude’s Baptism of Christ . Organ recitals are often held in the church.

  • France’s finest black truffles are sold here during the winter truffle season, and you can get preserved truffles and other delicacies the rest of the year.
