Paris

From Notre-Dame to the Eiffel Tower, Paris holds some of the world's most famous sights and these highlights should be top of the list for any first-time visitor. With the exception of the overtly modern Pompidou Centre, they have been landmarks of this elegant and romantic capital for centuries and remain awe-inspiring sights, no matter how often you visit the city.

More on guided tours in Paris
  • You may not get luxury but you do get a friendly atmosphere and access to the sights of Montmartre.

  • This was a small gem that we found by chance as we were shopping. It is a small, very traditional French cuisine restaurant, no more than 15 tables, with beautifully starched napkins and shining cutlery, and the food was both amazing and reasonable (I ordered duck with orange sauce/le menu). Service was also fabulous.

  • As its name suggests, clown-related clutter fills this fashionable, arty hangout. The wine list is excellent and the staff knowledgeable.

  • Dating back to the early 20th century, this ornate working men’s café/bar decorated with wall murals is where you’ll see the last remaining market traders sipping their dawn drinks.

  • Romantic candlelit atmosphere. Boeuf bourguignon is one of the typical traditional dishes.

  • The “Defender of Time”, Paris’s modern public clock, stands appropriately in the Quartier de l’Horloge (Clock Quarter) shopping area. This fantasy mechanical sculpture of brass and steel by Jacques Monastier is 4 m (13 ft) high and weighs one tonne. When the clock strikes the hour, the warrior fends off a savage bird, crab or dragon (representing air, water and earth) with his sword, with accompanying sound effects. At noon, 6pm and 10pm he vanquishes all three, to the crowd’s delight.

  • World music is played here, live and DJ, with regular dance events and concerts too.

  • One of the best fish restaurants in town, including oysters, salmon and sea bass.

  • Le Dôme

The prime fish restaurant in the area, once frequented by Sartre. Great food and grand decor.

  • This is a must for lovers of rare film music, the Rolling Stones and Iggy Pop, with hip tunes and the cheapest beer in Bastille.
