Paris

From Notre-Dame to the Eiffel Tower, Paris holds some of the world's most famous sights and these highlights should be top of the list for any first-time visitor. With the exception of the overtly modern Pompidou Centre, they have been landmarks of this elegant and romantic capital for centuries and remain awe-inspiring sights, no matter how often you visit the city.

More on guided tours in Paris
  • Excellent bistro in a 17th-century building. Expect dishes such as scallops with shallots, or veal and baked apples. Bustling at lunchtime, candlelit and quieter in the evening.

  • Go for the views as well as the food in this tearoom, open from breakfast until 2am.

  • Until recently refusing entry to women, this established restaurant specializes in French classics.

  • Fashionable offshoot of The China Club, this spacious bar with chic decor and an even smarter clientele rarely closes its doors.

  • This beautiful 18th-century restaurant with two Michelin stars is hard to beat.

  • Charcuterie and pâtés are some of the simple dishes at this typical early 20th-century bistro.

  • Book a window table for the wonderful views. The menus roam the world – try sea bass tagine . Reserve in advance.

  • Friendly wine bar with a terrace for the summer, and there’s a bistro too if you want to eat. Plenty of inexpensive wines by the glass, carafe or bottle.

  • Le Montclair Montmartre

Located at the back of the Montmartre Hill it is a great location away from the crowds but still close enough to enjoy staying in the Montmartre area and all the bars and restaurants it has to offer. For what the Montclair lacks in features makes it up by being cheap, clean and an excellent location.

  • Le Notre-Dame

Right by the Seine with magnificent views of Notre-Dame, the bright decor here makes up for the size of the rooms. There are three suites.
