  • This lively Argentinian place brings Latin America to the Latin Quarter. As well as drinks, also serves great meat dishes.

  • This former strip club is now a leading dance venue and popular among the gay community.

  • Fourteen beers are on tap in this Irish bar with live music every night and a bigger Irish concert once a month. The party really kicks in after 10pm.

  • A rustic tavern, selling beers from all over the world. Tradi- tional French food is served and there is even a beer-based cocktail menu.

  • This North African-style restaurant turns into a late-night club with DJ and a dance floor.

  • This legendary watering hole opened in 1911 and many an ex-pat found inspiration here, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and George Gershwin, who reportedly envisioned his An American in Paris orchestral work over a few drinks here. It still draws a lively American crowd, who come both for nostalgia and some of the best martini cocktails in town.

  • Belgian singer/songwriter Brel (1929–78) moved to Paris in 1953, where audiences loved his melancholy songs.

  • A gregarious wine bar off the beaten track and full of character, with a rustic beamed ceiling hung with country hams and a vine growing around the walls. The moustached owner from Auvergne is an enthusiastic wine lover and aims to please with his reasonably priced cellar. Closed in August.

  • The jazz club par excellence actually serves up a wider range of music than its name suggests. Check what’s on as you might get blues, rock or even gospel music. There’s a heavy emphasis on visiting African-American musicians (Oscar Peterson has played here). A sophisticated experience.
