  • The proximity to Notre-Dame gives the hotel its name. Ask for a room with a cathedral view, and be prepared for a Bohemian atmosphere. The area is noisy and the rooms are not modernized, though most have en suite bathrooms.

  • Hôtel Favart

A venerable hotel with modern bedrooms. Mirrored bathrooms and beams in the first-floor rooms make for a romantic setting.

  • This bargain hotel combines old-fashioned comfort with modern convenience. A bonus is the hotel’s car park.

  • Terrific value, slightly out of the centre but not far from the metro. New owners have smartened it up, and bamboo furniture works well with the lush garden. Rooms vary in size.

  • Tasteful decor throughout, and a walled garden, all just a short walk away from the Arc de Triomphe.

  • Right in the heart of the Bastille district, this nofrills hotel may be a chain but it’s handy for some of the city’s best markets. Rooms are cheaper at weekends.

  • Hôtel Inter-Continental

A world away from the usual anonymity of chain hotels, being set in a 19th-century building designed by Charles Garnier, also responsible for the Paris Opéra (see Opéra National de Paris Garnier). The original atmosphere has been retained, but the rooms offer everything you would expect from the name.

  • Book well ahead for a room in the Keppler, with its inexpensive prices in an expensive part of Paris. Rooms are spacious and provide the basic comforts – a few have balconies. The management ensures that cheap prices do not mean cheap service.

  • Pampering is paid for here, but the investment pays off with huge rooms in a 19th-century mansion just a stroll from the Champs-Elysées.

  • Built in 1773 for the Médici family, ancient beams and artworks now combine with modern design for a special place to stay. Rooms are small, but compensations are the garden, adjacent bar, and the location in a quiet street off boulevard St-Michel.
